The Hawaiian stilt is a bird with long legs that walks in shallow water.
About fifty years ago, there were fewer than 200 of these birds.
That number was very low and dangerous for the birds.
People worked hard to protect them from other animals.
They also fixed the wet areas where the birds find food.
Today there are more than 1,500 stilts.
The bird is now much safer than before.
