The Hawaiian stilt is a graceful wading bird with strikingly long legs.
About fifty years ago, its population had fallen to fewer than 200 individuals.
At that point, the species was in serious danger of disappearing forever.
Conservation teams began controlling the introduced predators that ate the birds and their eggs.
They also restored the wetlands where the stilts feed and raise their young.
Thanks to this hard work, the population has climbed to more than 1,500 birds.
The stilt has now been moved from 'endangered' to the safer 'threatened' status.
